As stated before, Sugar was created from a need for a lightweight and efficient system that could render graphics at any scale. Our main use of Sugar is the integration of it into a GUI toolkit called GLAM. GLAM is completely scalable, so Sugar filled the need of an icon rendering system. Normal bitmaps would not have worked well in GLAM, as they become inaccurately draw as you scale them up to huge levels. Scalable Vector Graphics drawn by Sugar does not suffer from this problem.
